LONDON FASHION WEEK…

Hey everyone, I’m sure a few of you have been wondering why I haven’t yet commented on London Fashion Week?! Well it’s because this fashion week I wasn’t simply attending shows/watching live streams or hanging around celeb spotting, I was actually working on an amazing TV project that is now LIVE on Grazia!!

If you’re an avid fashion blog follower you may have come across the wonderfully talented Abi from www.abimarvel.com; well Abi is the creator and founder of a little something (massive understatement) called ‘The Apartment’. The Apartment is a creative hub for fashion bloggers to chill, catch up, and blog from during London Fashion Week. So this season at London Fashion Week, I was the Assistant Producer of a small mini-series on The Apartment, documenting what the bloggers get up to during one of their most manic week’s of the year!

We documented their thoughts on the shows they went to see, their crazy antics and hilarious personalities within The Apartment and basically just gave you a sneak peek into what actually goes on! I suppose I can’t really explain much more, you’ll just have to watch it for yourself!! I’m sure you will see some faces you recognise, such as Ella from Coco’s Tea Party or a glimpse of Sandra from 5inchandup, so check out the two episodes below and let me know what you think!!!

Episode 2:

I had the most fun EVER working on this TV project and I’m so proud of the final outcome! Thank you to the amazing TV team Monica, Tom and Emily who made me cry with laughter every single day, they were the most amazing team to work with and they made it the best LFW that I’ve ever been part of!! Also a massive thank you to Abi for starting the whole thing, I met so many lovely people over the course of the week, and it was an honour to be working for such an awesome project. Hopefully see y’all next season!! x

WHAT I WORE…

So I was just telling someone today how I’m not really a personal style blogger, more of a bit-of-everything kind of gal. However I couldn’t help sharing this outfit with you that I wore today. Ever since I bought this skirt from Urban Outfitters I have wanted to wear it every day (I have resisted though and managed to simply wear it every other day!) it’s such an easy piece to wear and an awesome print (completely on trend for this summer’s monochrome trend which is MASSIVE already!) Let me know what you think- and I may post a few more ‘what I wore’ pics as London Fashion Week approaches!! x

#VOGUEFEST…LUCINDA CHAMBERS

Lucinda Chambers, Fashion Director at British Vogue is someone I have always admired; not only is she an inspiring style icon (her ability to mix and match prints has always fascinated me) but she has created some of Vogue’s most memorable photo shoots and covers during her time at the magazine. I was so pleased to be able to hear from her again at #VogueFest during the ‘My Fashion Life’ session on the Friday morning.

Lucinda and I discussing her recent Vogue cover with Kate Moss, at Vogue House last year.

I was of course lucky enough to meet Lucinda last year when I was doing Winchester Fashion Week and interview her about her position at Vogue and experiences in fashion; but at Vogue Festival she revealed even more fascinating stories and so I thought I’d share the best bits…

What I love about Lucinda is she likes to make it clear she never intended to end up in fashion. She was always interested in clothes but never fashion and being an ‘underachiever’ at school she said all she wanted was “to be a secretary and get married.” Little did she know the potential she had!!

Lucinda speaking at Vogue Festival

She ended up getting interested in fashion as Lucinda and her mother decided they were both going to apply for art college. They both created a rough art portfolio for the interview process; apparently they involved a lot of pasta shapes and wool!!! They must have been some very unique and inspired pasta/wool creations as she got into the art college, and whilst fashion was frowned upon she began making jewellry in the plastic workshops. Lucinda would sell these to friends and as she got more and more into it one day Lucinda’s earrings ended up appearing in a magazine! This was the first moment that she suddenly had an interest in fashion magazines and their power.

My favourite story of Lucinda’s is how she got into Vogue magazine. ”Smoking got me my first job,” she said…

“At the time when I joined Condé Nast as an assistant, all the office was partitioned. One day, my boss left for lunch and I quickly lit myself a cigarette. She forgot something and came back, so I threw my cigarette over the partition and it landed on the desk of the assistant to the then-editor of Vogue - Beatrix Miller. Luckily, she was a smoker too and she got me an interview at Vogue.”

Wow oh wow!! How did she get away with that?! She really came across as quite cheeky, and obviously isn’t afraid of hard work or a challenge. Working on shoots she said “I want all the people I work with to think that they wouldn’t want to be anywhere else that day. Celebrities are often nervous, bored, not in their comfort zone so they can be the most challenging.”

One of my recent favourites styled by Lucinda Chambers

And you know you’re a good fashion stylist when a US train driver steals your luggage containing hundreds of thousands of pounds-worth of couture and you still manage to pull off a Vogue cover debut for the gorgeous Emma Watson!! What a star Lucinda is. How did she do it??? I hear you cry!! Well…

“So the shoot started with me finding a pair of sunglasses in my bag – picture one -and Emma wearing the assistant’s hat – picture two. All the while I had her assistant there saying: “Emma’s been waiting for this moment for 10 years, you’re losing her here.”

Amazing. And the result…effortlessly stylish of course.

More #VogueFest posts to come of course…there is just SO much to tell you all! I’m afraid they will be broken up over the next few weeks though as I have so many things going on, working on a massive uni project, interning on a new fashion TV show, trying to organise photo shoots, visiting garden centres, WFW 2012 meetings….the list is endless! So don’t forget to subscribe to http://www.vikkilondon.com to hear the latest as soon as it’s posted!! Have a great evening!! x

#VOGUEFEST…CHRISTOPHER BAILEY

HOLA! So I literally have half a note book CRAMMED with my notes from the Vogue Festival as it was just SO good! I’m not quite sure how I’m going to cover everything but I shall certainly try!

So Christopher Bailey was first up on the schedule and what a man to start the show. Alexandra Shulman introduced the session with a short video on what Burberry is today. Wow. This video could have brought a tear to my eye, it was epic! It really opened my eyes to how Burberry really is MASSIVE, they cover every angle of fashion that’s physically possible and I believe when it comes to digital innovations in fashion, Burberry is definitely one of the leaders of this field.

Christopher firstly spoke of when he came to Burberry. Coming from Donna Karen which was “very New York” and Gucci which was “very Italian” when he arrived at Burberry he felt like he was coming home; Burberry was part of his culture, with memories of his Grandfather owning a Burberry trench coat. He described Burberry as an “incredibly beautiful diamond that hadn’t been given the love it should be given”, he commented on how “it wasn’t a brand, it was a company…it had no life and soul in it” and so from this moment Christopher Baileys’s relationship with Burberry began and flourished into what it is today.

Christopher emphasised the importance of the team when it came to Burberry, and described them as the “be all and end all”. With 9000 people worldwide they manage to stay connected with an internal social media site (like a Facebook for Burberry) called ‘Burberry Chat’ which connects head offices and stores worldwide. With this new technology it ensures there is “one Burberry culture” shared worldwide, but ultimately everything comes out of London.

When it comes to the design process Christopher starts with a mood, feeling or spirit. He admitted he’s “not very good with themes” and will discuss a mood or feeling with his team so the design process is overall very organic. The factories themselves also inspire his designs, as he believes “there’s something really beautiful about hand craft.” So far I was literally falling in love with Christopher, his love for his company and team really shone and he is a very emotionally driven character. He spoke highly of Britain and finds “the poetry of the British weather magical”….well I wouldn’t go that far Christopher?!  All this rain is a bit much for me…but then again I don’t yet own a Burberry trench…maybe that’s the answer!!

In true fashionista style, Christopher was jetting off to Tai Pei in China later that day, where they were holding a big event at their new store. Trying not to reveal too much Christopher described it as an “emmersive 360 experience”…I don’t know about you but I’m intrigued!! Apparently it was to be video and music experience that surrounded every angle of the room, inspired by the weather…at this point Alexandra jumped in to question this ‘experience’ as a possible “brainwashing technique?” But Christopher ensured us it wasn’t and said it was about inspiring people, and letting them personally experience what the brand should be about.

So do you want to know what Christopher Bailey does in his spare time?? Well the answer is spend as much time in Yorkshire as possible and watch his favourite TV shows including Downton Abbey, Master Chef and The Voice – apparently he admires Will.I.Am…future face of Burberry?? Nah maybe not!

Emma Watson as the face of Burberry

He wouldn’t reveal who the next face of Burberry is but he seemed very excited as they had just recently shot the campaign. When it comes to the face of the brand Christopher said it’s important for him to get to know the person properly first; before Emma Watson starting modelling for Burberry, Christopher met her socially and they became friends long before any modelling discussions occurred.

When the Vogue Fest session was opened to questions from the audience someone really put Christopher on the spot and asked whether he would have taken the position at Dior instead of Raf Simons!!! After some nervous laughter from the audience at Christopher’s delayed response and a bit of um..ahh..and errr-ing he spoke of the potential of Dior but that Burberry was his “baby” and that he said: “I wish Raf the best of luck…he’s going to be a rock star there.” Good answer Chris!

Of course one question that occurred AGAIN AND AGAIN at Vogue Festival was ‘how do I become a successful designer?’ I loved Christopher’s answer:

“Everybody has brilliance, but culture is the most important aspect”

He said it’s all about “Passion…people that love people…people who are results driven and will translate talk into action, people who want to learn and stay humble to learning.” Ultimately his advice was to, “stay curious.”

The final question of the session was ‘what project/achievement are you most proud of?’ His answer? “The team we’ve built. The team constantly astound me…they have such passion and inspire me every single day.”

What an amazing man. Stay tuned for more on my experiences at #VogueFest! x

#TOPCHICRET…THE LEGEND THAT IS CHARLOTTE FREE

Hey everyone (and a MASSIVE welcome to all my new followers!! Hope you enjoy my blog!!) Just seen this on twitter and HAD to share with you all!!

So back in September last year I was casting models for London Fashion Week and there was only one name on everyone’s lips…Charlotte Free. Everyone wanted her in their show and every designer I worked for found themselves mesmerised by her as soon as she walked in the room. Firstly there’s of course the iconic pink hair, and her unique punk meets girly pose but what everyone loves when they meet her is her cool-kid attitude and ability to make EVERY outfit she wears effortlessly edgy and cool. Of course she was one of the main stars of the Vivienne Westwood show, and was famously carried off by one of the other models in the finale as she blew kisses to the crowd. (See my previous post here about the Westwood show including my video of the finale.) I was not surprised when the reviews of that season all contained mentions of Charlotte Free, and now I have just come across this…

So it would seem little Miss Free has done pretty well for herself…as this little PR stunt reveals she is now the new face of Maybelline New York, watch this space…this girl is going to take over the world!!! x

ARE THOSE PYJAMAS?!

So this post is dedicated to the lovely gentleman yesterday who came up to me on Oxford Street to compliment me on my outfit. However he pointed out that the one thing that may be wrong is that I looked like I was wearing pyjamas. To which I answered, ‘yes, that’s kinda the point…’ to which he asked ‘what…are pyjamas bang on trend right now??’…YES MR. YES THEY ARE.

Image

He obviously isn’t an avid reader of vikkilondon.wordpress.com…as you shall recall I mentioned the pyjama trend in my trend summary a few months ago. I have to say that the pyjama suit trend is now one of my favourite trends this season simply because IT’S SO COSY! You get to be super stylish and super comfortable…what more could you ask for!?

So I thought I’d do a quick post to revisit some of the best of this trend we have seen on and off the catwalk this season…enjoy x

…sleep well! x

LFW: WHAT THEY WORE…

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get to London Fashion Week this season, however several of my friends and colleagues were right in the heart of the action! So over the next few days I thought I’d share with you what they wore and what they did, so you can get a real insight into what was going down, in and around Somerset House over the past week!

First up is the lovely Natalia Homolova!

So what were you doing at LFW?
I’m currently studying Fashion Management at LCF and my future plan is to be a buyer, so I was kinda getting experience of what its like lol plus I work in Matches as a sales consultant so I have to know about the new trends etc. I have a blog as well…(click here to see Natalia’s blog: ‘The way WE rock’)

What was your favourite show of this season?
The best show I’ve seen was Ashish – great colours, big statements, chunky knits and the music playing at the show was wicked!

Finally, can you talk us through your looks…
Monday: I was wearing Alexander McQueen fur jacket, Topshop shirt and earrings and ASOS skirt.
Tuesday: Acne leather jacket, Anya Hindmarch bag, Zoe Karssen tee, H&M jeans, Office brogues, camden market hat and Topshop necklace.Wednesday: Alexander McQueen leopard scarf, ASOS shirt, cardi from my Granma, American Apparel leggings, Jeffrey Campbell shoes, camden market necklace and Stella McCartney bag.

LFW After Party: For the after party I was wearing shirt by ci ci from Topshop, h&m jacket, ebay hairband and topshop jewellery.

I have absolutely loved following Natalia’s looks over LFW, I think you will agree her styling is so unique and so inspiring!! Thank you my love for sharing this with us!! SIZE ZERO??

So on Monday I was called by the BBC to discuss size zero models in the fashion industry. It was completely out of the blue, and the size zero debate is such a delicate subject, I was slightly nervous. However having worked with professional models at London Fashion Week and aspiring models at Winchester Fashion Week, I felt like I had quite a bit of background info to use for my discussion. Meanwhile I could use this opportunity to do a bit of promo for Winchester Fashion Week 2012, as this year they are promoting their use of all sizes, shapes and forms, and will have Gok-Wan-esque stylists on hand to style up the people of Winchester according to their shape!!

So here is the link to the interview below, the interview starts 1 hr 06mins into the show. I will post again later to go into the subject further and discuss some of the points raised. I really want to look into the idea raised that what if Marilyn Monroe was around today, and how would her size be received by the public eye? (Especially as there is that new film coming out called My Week With Marilyn! See http://myweekwithmarilynmovie.com/ for more details!!)
So anyway, have a good listen, and let me know what you think….

FASHION IS EXHAUSTING…

So the exhaustion and excitement of London Fashion Week just completely killed me. I didn’t even get to finish my blogging!! There were two more shows that I went to that season and they were Paul Smith (absolute legend!) and Mark Fast, dear friend of Winchester Fashion Week.

The Paul Smith show was fantastic, it felt classic and utterly sophisticated. I was fortunate to get a fabulous seat just behind Vogue Editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman, Vogue Fashion Director Lucinda Chambers and the iconic Anna Dello Russo. I really couldn’t believe my luck. Obviously having interviewed Lucinda for Winchester Fashion Week I was keen to say hi, but the stampede of editors once the show is done is mad and I just lost her in the crowd.

Backstage at Paul Smith

Anyway the shows were of course fantastic and rounded off my season perfectly. Paul Smith Finale below: (note the brilliant white trilby just in front of me is Anna Dello Russo, with Lucinda Chambers on her left, and Alexandra Shulman on Lucinda’s left).

It was fabulous to attend the Mark Fast show as even though my casting debut had come to the end after the Paul Smith show I was back representing Winchester Fashion Week at Mark Fast. Winchester Fashion Week (www.winchesterfashionweek.com) of course is the official platform on the south coast for Mark Fast and his line Faster by Mark Fast so I was so grateful to receive my invite, and I hope Mark will return to WFW 2012.

It was hard to switch off of my ‘casting head’ and I spent so much of the show analysing the casting decisions. They had a nice mixture of girls, Amber le Bon returned once again. However Mark’s unique use of knitwear managed to distract me from the girls, and his talent never fails to amaze. Many may argue that he repeats the same thing every season but if you’re amazing at what you do, and it’s become your unique trait, surely why change? See my little film of the Mark Fast finale below:

So that was it…London Fashion Week was done….or was it.

Nope. I was back AGAIN the next day! This time seeing it from a very different view point. I have been dressing shows at London Fashion Week for a couple of years now, however I think this year I was spoilt by being able to actually watch the shows etc when interning with casting. Therefore going back to dressing at Kinder Aggugini was not so fun! I still enjoyed it, and the girls I worked with were fab, but I do not miss being treated like dirt! I know everyone says it but interning for a designer is HARD WORK. The interns who work for all the designers really do put their lives into the collections and I witnessed this backstage at Kinder Aggugini with about 15 interns sat on the floor minutes before the show still sewing!! (I was even roped into this even though I begged not to be!! – I can sew but it’s definitely not my forte).

However my highlight of this show was definitely seeing the girls again!! After spending the whole week working with models you definitely get to know some of them, and many of my favourites were working the show including the beautiful Sophia. It was so nice to be able to say a proper goodbye. I was also dressing Charlotte Wiggins who I mentioned in one of my other posts (one of the faces of Burberry). She’s such a professional so I felt at ease dressing her.

OH and I forgot to add…I was stood next to the amaaaazing STEPHEN JONES.

Stephen (yep – first name terms now haha) had created some INCREDIBLE book hats for the collection, and therefore we had to send the models to him for each look. It was incredible working alongside such a legend, and being able to get a close look at his amazing hats. So once the show was finished…that was it. Finally…London Fashion Week was over. See you in February LFW!
