STAYCATION…

Hello vikkilondon followers! So I have had a bit of an unexpected break from blogging recently, I have been distracted by a mini trip to Florence, THE OLYMPICS and making the most out of my staycation in the UK. Ok, ok, staycation plus a trip to Florence is a bit of a contradiction but basically I have the travel bug BAD. I love to travel more than anything in the world, and I normally use the summer to do a big trip (in the past it’s been Oz, Fiji, etc) However this summer, thanks to the Olympics holding me back (why would I want to runaway from this once in a lifetime experience on my doorstep!) I have stayed in the UK for pretty much the whole summer (minus Florence) and I’ve had a jolly good time too!! Thanks to some new friends I have been on camp-outs, cook-outs, swimming in rivers, IOW festival, been a tourist in my own town and had an utterly fab time! I also plan to head down to Cornwall over the next couple of weeks as long as the weather holds out!

I recently found this feature on Vogue.co.uk that I wanted to share with you all which has some great ideas on having ‘fashion fun’ during your ‘staycation’. Check out the feature HERE and let me know what you think!!

Also because I have starved you of vikkilondon posts for so long here’s a cheeky Palermo treat as I know we are all massive fans!! Here she is leaving the Dior Couture show in Paris looking AMAZING in a leather peplum top.

If you’re a leather fan keep an eye out at Whistles as their AW collection is looking amazing and has some leather treats in store!! x

LOVE FOR NORMAN PARKINSON…

I’m currently decorating my flat and having a bit of a spring clean, so whilst re-designing my bedroom I decided I wanted a big fashion print to be the main feature on my wall. Of course typical me, I start looking for prints online and I get majorly distracted!!

Image

Norman Parkinson is the culprit, his work is amazing and makes me smile. One of THE great fashion photographers of the 50s and 60s his images remain so iconic, and his work for Vogue can be seen all over prints, postcards and possibly somewhere on your bedroom wall!! (Assuming you are all fashion lovers?) So I thought I’d delight you with some of his amazing work and which will hopefully bring a smile to your face too. x

#VOGUEFEST…LUCINDA CHAMBERS

Lucinda Chambers, Fashion Director at British Vogue is someone I have always admired; not only is she an inspiring style icon (her ability to mix and match prints has always fascinated me) but she has created some of Vogue’s most memorable photo shoots and covers during her time at the magazine. I was so pleased to be able to hear from her again at #VogueFest during the ‘My Fashion Life’ session on the Friday morning.

Lucinda and I discussing her recent Vogue cover with Kate Moss, at Vogue House last year.

I was of course lucky enough to meet Lucinda last year when I was doing Winchester Fashion Week and interview her about her position at Vogue and experiences in fashion; but at Vogue Festival she revealed even more fascinating stories and so I thought I’d share the best bits…

What I love about Lucinda is she likes to make it clear she never intended to end up in fashion. She was always interested in clothes but never fashion and being an ‘underachiever’ at school she said all she wanted was “to be a secretary and get married.” Little did she know the potential she had!!

Lucinda speaking at Vogue Festival

She ended up getting interested in fashion as Lucinda and her mother decided they were both going to apply for art college. They both created a rough art portfolio for the interview process; apparently they involved a lot of pasta shapes and wool!!! They must have been some very unique and inspired pasta/wool creations as she got into the art college, and whilst fashion was frowned upon she began making jewellry in the plastic workshops. Lucinda would sell these to friends and as she got more and more into it one day Lucinda’s earrings ended up appearing in a magazine! This was the first moment that she suddenly had an interest in fashion magazines and their power.

My favourite story of Lucinda’s is how she got into Vogue magazine. ”Smoking got me my first job,” she said…

“At the time when I joined Condé Nast as an assistant, all the office was partitioned. One day, my boss left for lunch and I quickly lit myself a cigarette. She forgot something and came back, so I threw my cigarette over the partition and it landed on the desk of the assistant to the then-editor of Vogue - Beatrix Miller. Luckily, she was a smoker too and she got me an interview at Vogue.”

Wow oh wow!! How did she get away with that?! She really came across as quite cheeky, and obviously isn’t afraid of hard work or a challenge. Working on shoots she said “I want all the people I work with to think that they wouldn’t want to be anywhere else that day. Celebrities are often nervous, bored, not in their comfort zone so they can be the most challenging.”

One of my recent favourites styled by Lucinda Chambers

And you know you’re a good fashion stylist when a US train driver steals your luggage containing hundreds of thousands of pounds-worth of couture and you still manage to pull off a Vogue cover debut for the gorgeous Emma Watson!! What a star Lucinda is. How did she do it??? I hear you cry!! Well…

“So the shoot started with me finding a pair of sunglasses in my bag – picture one -and Emma wearing the assistant’s hat – picture two. All the while I had her assistant there saying: “Emma’s been waiting for this moment for 10 years, you’re losing her here.”

Amazing. And the result…effortlessly stylish of course.

More #VogueFest posts to come of course…there is just SO much to tell you all! I’m afraid they will be broken up over the next few weeks though as I have so many things going on, working on a massive uni project, interning on a new fashion TV show, trying to organise photo shoots, visiting garden centres, WFW 2012 meetings….the list is endless! So don’t forget to subscribe to http://www.vikkilondon.com to hear the latest as soon as it’s posted!! Have a great evening!! x

WHAT I WORE…#VogueFest

Hello everyone, a quick apology for those who received an email notification about this post being up and it not existing yet! Slight technical issue my end – that’ll teach me from trying to blog from my phone!

Anyway! We are here now!

So I don’t normally do the whole ‘what I wore’ thing, however I thought I’d do a quick share to see what you guys think. I have a fairly simple style and most of my outfits feature a fair bit of Whistles (of course!) I didn’t really think much about what I was going to wear at the Vogue Festival but I went for the printed trouser trend for both days as I love it and it’s so easy to wear. Of course the Wisteria print trousers do feature…

Day 1:

So for day 1, I had no idea what to expect from the festival so I went for a casual and comfy outfit of printed Whistles jeans, topshop blouse, Zara coat and of course the Whistle’s Marianne satchel!

Day 2:

After day 1 I had discovered a formula that worked. So once again, the printed trouser was back, this time – the classic Whistles Wisteria Print trouser; with cream topshop knit, topshop tribal necklace, and the same Zara coat and Whistle’s Marianne Satchel.

Obviously there is SO much more to blog about from #VogueFest than just what I wore!! I have been manically taking notes over the past couple of days and I hope to share all the happenings with you over the coming week or so…it’s too much to cover in just one post so bare with me!

Good luck to everyone I know running the London Marathon tomorrow and have a good Saturday night everyone! x

MODEL CRUSH: KARLIE KLOSS

I love when you wake up on a lazy Friday morning to find a super thick Vogue magazine in your post box; and this month’s edition was bumper packed with some amazing shoots! One in particular caught my eye.

‘Lady Luxe’ shot by Mario Testino and styled by Lucinda Chambers was full of colour, glamour, texture/print and frankly it was just plain amazing. It also reminded me of how much I love Karlie Kloss. She is so versatile as a model, but I think she really suits this glam/retro, lady like look. She has been a muse to many, opened and closed so many catwalk shows, she’s become a Victoria’s Secret Model and she’s only 19!! (Well to be fair, that is like approaching middle-aged I suppose for ‘model life’ isn’t it?)

Anyway I love her style off the catwalk too, and often find myself being influenced by her simple, yet effortlessly chic look.

Let me know if you love ‘The Kloss’ too! I think she’s one of THE models at the moment, and I’m sure she’s going to continue to grow as a model, and we will be seeing a lot more of her in the near future!!

OH VERSACE…

So as I crawled to uni this morning at about 8am seriously regretting not getting more sleep (Thursdays are always tough for me), I thought to myself why oh why would anyone CHOOSE to be up this early, and then I saw this…

…oh FOR VERSACE OF COURSE!!

Of course, today was the launch of the new limited Versace for H&M collection, and with my campus right on Oxford Street I witnessed the craziness of all the queuing and waiting just to get a peek at the collection (and of course later witnessed the hundreds of people with like 12 bags each – most of which probably ended up on ebay!)

The collection does look fantastic and although I personally wouldn’t wear much of it, the colours and exotic patterns are so unique and really quite beautiful.

The collection pays homage to classic Versace colours and styles, and it’s great that this iconic brand has been brought to the high street. When I interviewed Lucinda Chambers, Fashion Director of Vogue for Winchester Fashion Week she spoke highly of the British high street and commented on how we are extremely lucky to have such a great range of high street stores on our door step. With collaborations like this popping up everywhere now, I think we are luckier than ever; these collaborations are opening up high street shoppers’ eyes to fashion and making everyone aware of great iconic design.

The key piece that I love from the collection is this beautiful quilted jacket. I think its a great piece that you can team with either clashing prints, or if you’re like me and don’t normally go for something quite so ‘bright’ it would look fab over black (my staple colour!)

Price: £69.99 – but sold out online, and probably pretty much everywhere!

Like I mentioned earlier, rumour has it that a lot of pieces are now being sold off online, so if you’re desperate for a piece of the action check out ebay…but good luck! Do let me know if you queued up to get into a H&M store today, and what you bought. Several of my friends did and were lucky enough to get free perfume and a free clothes bag! Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

VOGUE’S FASHION NIGHT OUT…

So last night I took part in Vogue’s Fashion Night Out. I have to admit I had never attended before and had only watched from a distance but last night I got fully involved in all the festivities and I have to say it was one hell of a good night!

We started off in Harvey Nichols at their fabulous fairground themed party. Being welcomed onto the womenswear floor with a glass of champagne (that was topped up every time I drank a sip) I knew it was going to be a good night!

From pin the ponytail on Karl to free ice cream and sweets there were treats galore for everyone; however the highlight everyone was there for was the t-shirt customisation by well known designers such as JW Anderson and Jonathan Saunders.

Having interned at Jonathan Saunders I have to admit I was bias and I waited for him to arrive as he was the only one I wanted to customise my tee! It was worth the wait as the man worked his magic and used pink and orange spray paint as they are the key colours from his up and coming collection shown next week at London Fashion Week. Jonathan seemed pleased to be at the event beaming from ear to ear. He was so bubbly and happy meeting everyone with a glass of champers in his hand, the stresses and strains of the leering fashion week seemed non existent. His business partner and close friend Yvie Hutton was at his side the whole night, providing a giggle as Jonathan expressed his creativity in multiple rainbows and love hearts on everyone’s t-shirts. After having such a laugh at Harvey Nichols we headed out to Bond Street where we knew most of the action was happening. The buzz on Bond Street was incredible, with everyone in their ‘on-trend’ looks, secretly hoping to get papped by all the style bloggers out and about armed with their SLR’s!We walked all the way up Bond St stopping in at Burberry, admiring the crowd waiting for Gwyneth Paltrow outside Coach, watching the Hermes bangle rolling game in their make shift horse box, there was just so much to take in!! We ended our night in Liberty, grabbing some cocktails from their Hawaiian cocktail bar and slyly checking out their strapping male models in open floral print shirts. We headed home exhausted but had an amazing night and cannot wait until next year!! Next adventure…London Fashion Week… stay tuned to find out what I’m getting up to!
